St Mary’s College School Direct Primary Partnership (with Hull SCITT)
Primary (Early Years) – Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1 (Ages 3 – 7)
Primary (General) – Key Stage 1 and 2 (Ages 5 – 11)
St Mary’s College School Direct Primary QTS programmes are school-based, professionally-oriented courses that will provide you with excellent training and future career prospects.
The programmes are coordinated by St Mary’s College, an outstanding Catholic secondary school with National Support School (NSS) and Teaching School status, together with its academy trust partner Catholic primary schools in Hull. The eight Catholic schools in the trust are collectively known as St Cuthbert’s Catholic Academy Trust.
Our primary QTS training courses are delivered in conjunction with, and accredited by, Hull SCITT and include the option to achieve the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE, Masters Level 7) from the University of Hull. Our programmes draw together leading primary practitioners from across the city to lead subject specialist training and school-based mentoring.
The school-centred nature of the training programme means you will be based in two different Catholic primary schools within St Cuthbert’s Catholic Academy Trust for the full academic year. Your school placements will provide variety of experience and teaching practice, build your confidence and classroom excellence and will equip you well for the reality of your NQT year.
Throughout both school placements you will be strongly supported by St Mary’s College, Hull SCITT tutors and school-based mentors.

Testimonials from previous Primary School Direct trainees
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the School Direct PGCE this year. The Catholic cluster of schools have been very welcoming and accommodating. It has been a very practical hands on approach to teacher training, in which I have picked up lots of useful tips and ideas and then applied them directly into teaching the following week! The course has certainly given me a real insight into the life of a teacher and I have felt very much a part of the schools from day one. I am now looking forward to start working in St Charles school where I have obtained a teaching post from September. CG
Primary School Direct Hull has given me a holistic experience as a training teacher; it has helped me to become part of a school team specifically within a Catholic Primary School. Being based in a school full time has ensured that I have observed examples of good practice and have worked alongside positive role models. Weekly training sessions include travelling around the Hull and East Riding Catholic schools and I have built up a network of support and friendly faces; there is always someone there for support and to give guidance. Experts throughout these schools have provided me with hands-on practical training, high-quality teaching practice and valuable advice. Professional studies sessions are run alongside to ensure all theory and background knowledge are included and covered. I have taught across both Key Stage One and Two giving me a range of experiences and excellent professional development within the school. The course is a brilliant opportunity and definitely worth all the hard work. KB
The School Direct Primary Education is a fantastic way to enter the teaching profession. From the very first day you are made to feel welcome in your placement school and get firsthand experience of the daily routines of school life. This provides solid foundations for you to feel equipped to be a successful teacher in the future. The partnership schools are all extremely welcoming and have provided the opportunity to draw on a wealth of different expertise that has enriched our teaching practice through their weekly subject knowledge inputs. This allows you to apply the training you have received straight away which is extremely beneficial to your own teaching development. I could not rate this course more highly for anyone wanting to enter the teaching profession. DF
The PGCE School Direct programme is an excellent course that introduced me to the world of teaching. St Mary’s College and the family of Catholic Primary Schools in Hull have provided me with high quality training. I received professional support from my mentors and classroom teachers who were always there to help me. The PGCE course is demanding but very rewarding. Unlike university-based training, School Direct provides continuity of teaching at school. This fully prepares Newly Qualified Teachers for their future work. NR
The School Direct programme offers students the unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a classroom environment; something that is highly beneficial during training but also when it comes to job prospects towards the end of the course. In addition to gaining this valuable insight into schools and how they run on a daily basis there is also the chance to learn from experienced teachers and meet head teachers and senior leaders. CS
